Grade 5, The Academy at Ocean Reef
The Academy at Ocean Reef is hard at work ensuring that everybody follows the three W’s; Wash your hands, Watch your distance, and Wear a mask. The staff and teachers are hard at work making sure everybody is safe while learning many new things. During the spring term last year, The Academy resorted to online schooling, but this school year they have a real school and they are teaching kids much more.
As part of The Academy at Ocean Reef’s focus on Character Education, Head of School, Mr. Murphy wants all kids to be respectful, kind, honest, compassionate, committed, courageous, to be a leader and to be their best, all while being safe and COVID free. They call these Academy Values.
An example of respect is on Veterans Day, many of The Academy students wrote messages to veterans. One of the messages said, “Dear Ralph, thank you for your service and participation in keeping our country safe. You have taught us to be respectful and treat others the way we want to be treated. Sincerely, Jonathan 2nd grade.”
An example of leadership is The Academy’s Ocean Guardian yearly project. We show leadership by caring for our ocean and trying to reduce marine debris. The Academy was the first school in Florida to participate in the Ocean Guardian program.
Those were a few examples of the Academy Values that the children follow. The school motto (“We may be small but we think big”) is a great representation of The Academy at Ocean Reef. The school doesn’t have as many students as other schools, but that means the teachers can teach the students more of what they need to practice to get better at the subject. Bryce in 5th grade says, “The teachers can teach more one on one compared to other schools because of the number of students.”
There aren’t many schools like The Academy at Ocean Reef. The purpose of The Academy Values program is to make the students more kind, respectful, honest, compassionate, committed, courageous, to be a leader, and to be their best. As you can see, The Academy is working hard to keep school open and to teach kids like never before.
