Sassicaia, Italy
Joined by Chef David Codney

Sassicaia is the Italian wine that broke all the rules and became Italy’s first Super Tuscan. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a Piedmontese agronomist, moved with his wife Clarice della Gherardesca to Bolgheri to reorganize the property his wife had inherited, which had become neglected during the war. The name of the property was Tenuta San Guido. Breaking with the local tradition of using Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, Mario Incisa planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc on the gravelly soil. This is how Sassicaia, meaning “area of many stones,” came to be. With the help of an oenologist, Sassicaia became a sensation, with the 1985 vintage and a stunning 100-point review by Robert Parker. Today, Tenuta San Guido is run by Mario’s son, Marchese Nicoló Incisa della Rocchetta. Sassicaia is still their flagship wine, but the family has also produced two more wines, Le Difese and Guidalberto, designed to be enjoyed while waiting for Sassicaia to mature.
