Take a Deep Breath – Ocean Reef’s Air is Clean
By Holly Houser, Ocean Reef Press Manager
Safety is at the forefront of everyone’s minds these days, and the Club is taking steps to ensure our Members can safely enjoy The Reef’s amenities and feel comfortable doing so. To that end, Ocean Reef has invested in top-of-the-line air purification systems installed in the majority of Club facilities and are looking to add more.
Prior to the onset of the Coronavirus, Ocean Reef facilities had air conditioning filtration systems with a “MERV 8” rating – the industry standard. A MERV rating reports an air conditioning filter’s ability to capture particles before they pass through an existing HVAC unit. The higher the MERV rating, the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles.
In response to the virus, Club Management looked to go beyond the industry standard. Our leaders conducted extensive research to determine what system(s) would best improve the indoor air quality at the Club and help to further protect Members and Associates from COVID-19. Several steps have already been implemented as a result of that research.
First, the majority of air conditioning units Club-wide have been upgraded to have hospital grade MERV 11 and 13 filters – well above the industry standard. Each unit has been assessed on a case-by-case basis and equipped with the highest MERV rating filter the individual units can accommodate.
For added protection, the highest-volume facilities around the Club will be fixed with AirPHX systems, which are top-of-the-line wall-mounted air purification units. These AirPHX systems work to purify air already inside the building. Once the indoor air is pulled into the machine, the air is filtered and then expelled along with trace amounts of hydrogen. This mixture, undetectable to anyone in the room, then disinfects the surrounding in-room air and all surfaces. In the Member Fitness Center for example, the system not only sanitizes the air you’re breathing, but also all of the workout machines.
AirPHX machines are currently installed in the Member Fitness Center and the Card & Games Room with plans underway to install additional units throughout other high-volume indoor Club facilities.
Smaller areas where Members are in close proximity, like the Spa treatments rooms, have been equipped with new individual air purifiers – Homedics TotalClean. These systems filter the in-room air through a HEPA filter as well as a UV-C light, designed to kill 99.9% of all bacteria and viruses. They are quiet and compact, have no impact on the massage or spa experience, and add another element of safety for both Members and providers.
The goal in installing these new systems is to create as many layers of protection on top of the sanitation and social distancing efforts already implemented. Club-wide, mask wearing and social distancing are enforced, gatherings are limited, and we use sanitizing and disinfectant sprays in all appropriate areas.
“We hope the addition of the new purifying systems help give all of our Members some comfort as they go through this season,” said ORC President Alex Tonarelli. “We encourage everyone to keep in mind that these tools act as an additional support, but not a replacement for the safety guidelines and protocols we’ve already been practicing. As we continue to learn more about this virus, we will consider additional layers of safety.”
